IT Business and Industry

OVER THE LAST 18 YEARS, PMCC has assisted a variety of companies involved in the IT and telecommunication industries on projects ranging from installing mobile technology on utility trucks to facilitating a corporate wide initiative to update the Windows operating system on 12,000 computers located in five different states. IT projects offer challenges not normally faced by other industries. The ever-evolving software and hardware used in the industry makes managing "scope creep" a particular challenge for IT project teams. To help overcome this challenge, we have assisted individual project team members to become more competent in the usage of project management best practices, and we have helped companies improve the project management maturity of their organizations so that they can properly address changes to the scope as they occur.

A sampling of notable IT achievements include:

Technology - Staff Training

Worked with the CIO of a major oil company to develop a customized training curriculum for an IT staff of 350. We interviewed management, supervisors, and potential class attendees to find out what they wanted. Using an interview and assessment process, we identified several courses that were needed, including "Implementing Best Practice PM for Executives", a customized version of the PMCC "Results Driven Principles of Project Management", and customized one- and two-day versions of the PMCC MS Project courses.

Technology - Year 2000 Project

Overview: A major corporation has a huge investment in computer equipment and software. The Y2K project was divided into five corporate divisions. PMCC was responsible for providing project management services for two divisions within the organization.

Scope: Identify all hardware and software systems within both divisions. Hardware and software systems scattered across a multi-state region. Project team and associated technical contacts exceed 150 people. Witness test, verify and document that all systems are Y2K compliant. Identify and perform risk analysis on critical systems. Prepare cost benefit analysis on non-critical systems.

Schedule: Prepare schedule input and updates to corporate Office of the Y2K Project.

Technology - NT 4.0 Implementation

Overview: Major corporation has approximately 12,000 PC's located throughout a multi- state service area and operates and maintains a vast LAN/WAN system. PMCC provided Project Management Consulting and Scheduling services for this project.

Scope: Implement NT 4.0 operating system throughout the corporation in a timely manner with minimum interruption to our internal PC users and external customers.

Schedule: Develop a detailed implementation schedule to cover the Pilot and Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the project. Schedule was developed in Microsoft Project98 and had approximately 1500 activities. Back to Top>

IS/IT - Mobile Project

Overview: Major public utility serving portions of several states in the southern United States. Major areas are Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Customer Service. PMCC provided Project Management, Scheduling, and Cost Management services on this project.

Scope: Implement a Mobile Data System (MDS) that will allow service orders to be broadcast to meter service employee vehicles on a real-time basis. The system would also allow for real-time feedback of order status to the customer service center. A service order would include a request for new electric or gas service, a disconnect of service, a disconnect for non-payment, a trouble call, etc. The MDS would utilize the existing 800Mhz system. By installing Motorola repeaters at strategic antenna sites, information was transmitted to Motorola equipment (Forte' and MDT9100) mounted in the meter services vehicles. The mobile client software was provided by Alliance/MDSI.

Schedule: A work breakdown structure was developed to meet the needs of the project team. A detailed scheduled was generated in Primavera scheduling software to track construction, testing, and implementation on a weekly basis.

Cost: The project utilized a PMCC in-house cost tracking system. This PC based system tracked original budget, budget revisions, current budget, commitments, actual expenditures and generated project cost on a real- time basis. Back to Top>
