PMCC has been helping corporations manage projects on the enterprise and portfolios of projects since its inception. When organizations must handle multiple projects using the same resource pool, the need for key strategies to unite their supporting processes and procedures to manage the portfolio of projects at the enterprise level (EPM) is essential. For years, managers of portfolios of projects have had to cobble together best practices on how to make priority decisions, account for staff “overhead” time when spread over many projects, and a myriad of other issues that the manager of individual projects did not have to address.

Only recently has PMI released a Portfolio Management Standard. Preceding this standard and over several years, many of the major project and business management software packages have either released dedicated software or incorporated essential Portfolio management features into their offerings. PMCC can help you sort through the variety of available options, choose and then implement the correct enterprise project management and portfolio management solution for your organization. If your organization has already chosen a system but is not yet realizing the full enterprise and portfolio project management benefits of that system – we can help there too.

Key concepts and processes that PMCC can help your company incorporate include:

  1. Put in the basics first. Adopting enterprise and portfolio management in your company is not a simple process. Projects must be consistently defined so they may be properly prioritized. As simple and obvious as that statement is, many companies do not clearly define what a project is, much less categorize and then prioritize them. PMCC can help you through the often painful “standardization” process for identifying, classifying, and prioritizing projects.
  2. Best Practice portfolio or enterprise project management requires the proper identification and classification of resources! For IT departments worldwide, one of the biggest issues when addressing the enterprise and the execution of a large portfolio of projects is the availability of the proper resources with the needed skill sets. PMCC can help you to identify and classify all of the resources in your company and then enter that vital data into your portfolio or enterprise project management tool.
  3. How do you break ties! Best Practice requires that there be a process and method for addressing conflicts between activities and/or resources on multiple projects and between the projects themselves. PMCC can help you to establish these processes within your enterprise framework and then integrate those processes within your portfolio management software.
  4. Not sure where to start? Measure your organizations’ current PM maturity and chart improvements: PMCC staff are trained and certified in PMI’s Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3) Product Suite, which has as its focus the Knowledge-Assessment-Improvement triad. Then chart your organizations progress through the SMCI stages of Standardize, Measure, Control and continuously Improve while keeping in mind that alignment of the PM process with Organizational business goals and vision are the primary focus.
